Founded in 1936 by Jo France, the name has since become synonymous with java (popular waltzes) and accordion music. At the time, Bastille was the liveliest working-class area in Paris. Times have changed though: nowadays the Balajo has become somewhat old-fashioned, with salsa and disco replacing the popular dances of old. Generally it's a middle-aged crowd that comes here looking for a bit of nostalgia. If you fancy somewhere completely different, this place is well worth paying a visit - even just for a look at the period décor.
