Since 1993, the New Year in Paris has begun with music, fanfare and processions from major universities around the world: 5,000 participants, including many Americans, perform to no less than ten times as many spectators. This colourful parade includes music floats and street shows. It used to take place in the little streets of the picturesque area of Montmartre, but it has become so popular that it has spread to the large boulevards of Paris: from the rue du Faubourg St-Denis at boulevard Bonne-Nouvelle to Place de la Madeleine. Admission is free.
