François de Rohan, Prince of Soubise, commissioned the building of this palace in 1705. Besides its Musée de l'Histoire de France, visitors will also appreciate the décor of the rooms, which were for the most part redesigned between 1735 and 1740 by a few masters such as Van Loo and Natoire. In the Princesse de Rohan's former apartments, there are many documents tracing France's historical events as well as Napoleon's last will and testament. Since a Napoleonic decree of 1808, this residence has become the property of the French republic and houses the national archives.
