Founded in 1253 by Robert de Sorbon, King Saint-Louis' Chaplain, la Sorbonne is famous the world over. When it began, 16 students studied Theology. Now there are thousands of students in every field of study. The chapel is the only building that remains of those ordered built by the Cardinal of Richelieu, headmaster of the university in 1626, who was buried in the chapel. Its activity suppressed during the French revolution, the Sorbonne was re-established by Napoléon in 1806. The other buildings date from the 19th century.
